Default Hercus Tool and Cutter Grinder

Hi all, I have just taken delivery of a nice little Hercus T&C Grinder. Needs some work, but should come up ok.
Any help identifying info on this little machine.... manual, serial number, manufacturing date would be most appreciated.

    Geoff,

What you have is a No.3 T&C. The 3 was superseded by the 3A which featured a ball bearing mounted table but remained very similar in appearance to the 3. I think production of the 3 commenced in the late 1940's. I had a 3 but it was worn out. It has been replaced with a wonderful No.1.

Here are a few links that may be of interest regarding the No.3 -

    Default Thanks for the info.

Hi Bob, fantastic info. More than I could have hoped for and exactly what I need.

That No 1 you have is certainly one nice little machine. Maybe a No 1 for my next purchase.

In the meanwhile, I have found the electric motor to be inconsistent when trying to start it. Sometimes starts some times does not, and when running it vibrated and may have even be a little slow. As the machine has sat around collecting dirt and rust for the past 30 years, I'm not surprised.

I blew accumulated dust n muck off the contacts and brushes and voila, it runs fine. Lucky me, a replacement would have cost $375.

A question though, (if this is down your alley) is it recomended to spray the contacts and brushes with CRC 2-26 to ensure all continues to run ok or leave it dry?

    Thanks Geoff.

Your electrical question is something I can't answer Geoff. Maybe ask it on the main metalwork forum.

When I had the No.3 I collected a number of photos of other 3s that showed some of the accessories that Hercus offered for the grinder. Mine came only with an orphaned tailstock and an internal grinding spindle. I have an email with those photos attached that I sent to Mal at Australian Metalworking Hobbyist when he was after a few images. Mal has a No.3. If you think they may be of interest send me a PM with an address I can wire them to.

Hey Bob, do you know what bearings are supporting the grinding wheel?

It all works ok, but I thought If they were not pin or roller bearing I may need to do some work there and maybe some lubrication, should they be white metal or something like that.

    cheers Geoff.

    Hi Geoff,

Peter "PDW" has the spindle pictured below from my No.3 but I'm pretty certain the spindle of the later 3A is identical. It originally had four oil lubricated SKF 6204 ball bearings supporting the spindle. They were spring preloaded. I replaced them with sealed bearings. I will send you a copy of the scant 3A instruction "book".
