Default 260 Compound and Cross Slide Micrometer stud thread???

    Evening all,
Today I decided that I'd make a couple of thumb screws for my 260 so that I could easily zero my cross-slide and compound dials, replacing the grub screws that are barely long enough - Only problem is I can't determine the thread.

I know the diameter of the stud that fits is 180 thou (4.57mm) and its a 24TPI thread.

The closest Ive got so far is that it could be:
    • No10 UNC
    • 3/16 BSW (But it looks like a 60 degree and not a 55 degree as BSW should be)

I have a No10 UNC die but that doesn't seem to fit - I turned the shaft down to that of the stud that fits and then ran the die down it.

Could anyone confirm what it actually is?

    Thanks
    Jon

Your screw OD doesn't conform to either of the threads you mention, ( unc .190" / bsw .1875" ) may be due to wear.

The different angle shouldn't present any great concern, you may have to run a tap through the dial, 10/24 unc would be my 1st choice.

Thanks Pipeclay - Running tap down the dial . I'll give it a go - hopefully the thread is simply blocked with years of crud and once it starts it'll be fine.

By turning my new shaft down to the same diameter as the screw that came out and then running the tap down it, I thought I should be OK - assuming I'd picked the right thread!

I'll have another look tonight and see how I go.

    Thx

Default Hercus 260 Cross & Compound Thread

I machined mine to .187" dia & Screwcut to 3/16" - 24 tpi BSW thread form & they fitted fine.
The larger dia. heads of the Screws are Knurled.
These have proved to be very convenient locking screws.
    regards
    Bruce
