Flat Belt Retailers
Hi Listers,
I have a question for the greater minds out there - where does one purchase flat belts these days (or the materials to make up one)?
I have a need of a flat belt (which I am guessing would have been originally leather) about 50mm wide and (eventually) in a ~2m loop.
Some of you may have seen that I am now the proud owner of a 21" Hercus Drilling Machine that needs a belt between the two speed reducing cones at the back of the machine. I will have to join the belts as the supports for both shafts are continuous so I won't be able to get a continuous belt over the cones and through the shaft supports..
What would be the recommended material for the belts?
Thanks in Anticipitation

Hi Rodd
I got mine for $60 about 10 years ago from powergrip when they were still in Boxhill.
Powergrip - Flat Transmission Belting
I went to Rowville a few years back and they had a cash sales counter then so I guess they still do.
I had the old one as a sample.

Hi Stuart,
Thanks for the info. I downloaded a catalogue and will chase them up in a couple of weeks when I'm closer to installing the belt (next challenge!).

Don't forget there are far more modern materials that flat belts are available in than leather. I've been eyeing off this kevlar cored material that should be ideal.

I'm using a poly-V belt on my belt drive Hercus. It's working well since I found out that, contrary to advices, the belt should not be fitted flat side to pulleys - it slipped that way.

leather belts
Hi Rodd,
Your local craft, come leather merchant should be able to supply bridle leather in whatever width you want plus to tools and glue to join it. I made one for my 45 model C which works well.

Leather belts.
Hi Rod. In replacing the leather belt on my elderly Hercus I found the harness maker at a local race course, told him what I wanted and what fore. He selected the "right leather"
slit it to the width/length I specified and supplied 2 lengths for $20.oo I joined the belt using a gel type commercial contact cement after tapering the faces of the belt for a length of 5" as described in the South Bend Lathe book.

Rydell Industrial belting (in WA) supplied mine, cc over the phone and one of the guys even dropped it off after work, same day I broke the leather one (more joiners than leather in the end). Hows that for service. They have got my business.
No affiliation except as happy customer.
