I take it that you want to anneal so as to make the bending easier. If you anneal the material, you will be left with a material of unknown mechanical properties and ageing will restore only some of the properties. Altogether not a good idea when you consider the planned use of the section and another reason supporting my original statement that Aluminium trailer design is not for the faint of heart and opens the proverbial pandoras box.
Hey Karl, Thanks or the post i need to make one 20 degree bend per each side of the i beam i can cold bend it over 1.2 meters at 16 degrees i than tried to bend that same bend to 19.1 degrees but see the picture below at 19.1 degree's it gets a grainy look on the outside, however 16 degree's is fine there is no markings
pictured is the length of i beam i have been testing with so far to see what i could get from it
Is it just an optical illusion or are those two bends at very different radii? It looks like one is a lot tighter than the other. I would have expected 20 degrees to be easily attainable provided the radius was nice and gentle. Having seen your earlier post re bending the I beam in your press, I reckon your method needs some fine tuning. I reckon you need to make a radius former similar to a pipe bender so as to get a gentle and consistent bend radius. Having said that, you may well struggle to bend that way in a workshop press with limited stroke available.
I definitely wouldn't anneal the section as you would then be working with very much an unknown quantity. I have done it for non critical components, but would not be keen for the main runners of a boat trailer.
2 different radius's Karl it was just a test piece i actually made 3 bends on this piece, first bend was 16 degrees, second bend was on the existing 16 to 19.1 degrees than i tried to use my die on the other radius
I'm going to refine the die i built and use more of a curve instead of the points I'll grind down the welds and run some 5mm flat bar around the radius supporting it where needed and see how i go bending again
i still have another length of i beam that hasn't been bent yet so i will make sure i have a better die before i try it
thanks for helping out Karl and everyone else i really appreciate the advice and help :2tsup:
Capral sells a few sizes of i beam can someone give advice to best size to use? There is
