A strap wrench is a handy thing but you are right it will tend to slip on a polished chrome surface like the ram shaft if high torque is involved .
You got it on ok so that's good work. Lucky it had a split clamping thread . It depends on the surface involved but anything that slips under load can cause unsightly marks and scratches on polished surfaces .The volume of a pizza of thickness 'a' and radius 'z' is given by pi z z a.
