Default I need to paint my trailer

    Greetings from Perth...

I need to paint my 6 X 4 trailer which lives outside.

It is about 5 years old and and was painted with hammer tone blue, which now is flaking and some surface rust. The trailer is used about 10 times a year.

I want to do a good job -any tips?
Is the hammer tone a problem?

    Thanks.

    Hi,
Normally, hammertone is a good finish, I think you'll find that the paint was applied straight onto the steel, no undercoat!!!!!
To redo the trailer, I'd get it sand blasted and then primed in red oxide, then finish it with a couple of coats of your fav colour hammertone.
Paint is only as good as the base it has to stick to, some places don't even wipe the oil/dust/crap off the metal!!!!

My trailer used to always be stored in my barn, until we dismantled the barn to move house last year. Now it sits in the open back yard, but has a tub sitting over the axle and a cheap Aldi tarp covering it. The tub sits about 250mm above the walls and ensures that any rain etc runs off the tarp so it doesn't end up with pockets of water.

Not really relevant to having to repaint, but a good way to protect the paint and metal once you do.

Years and years ago I did a complete wheels up on my trailer, I even pulled the leaf springs apart.
All I did was scrape any flaking paint and rust off with a paint scraper then apply liberal doses of rust converter making sure I got it well in to the joins then spray painted it.
I did something like 14 coats underneath (overkill) and about five coats on the rest. I have had the trailer for about 30 years now and there is still no signs of rust even though it is stored outside.

Does anyone know of a good primer for aluminium?
    Sorry to hijack the thread.

The best I know of is Alodine (chromate conversion primer), or etch primer.
