Thread: Tray Visibility vsb1

Hi Everyone,
After I was well into building my trailer, I read a section of the vsb1 that I did not realised existed. Here it is to refresh your memories:


''On every trailer, which is 2.2 metres or more in width and which has a body of the tray type, and is not fitted with a rear marking plate. There must be displayed by painting or otherwise across the full width of the rearmost portion of the tray, a clearly visible white or silver coloured horizontal band having a uniform depth of at least 75mm.''

Well my trailer is exactly 2.2 metres wide and I did not plan to have this 75mm strip across the back. Please see photo.
My questions:
Can I have lights and number plate across the 75mm band?
How strict are the inspectors likely to be when I go for roadworthy?
Is easily fixed by attaching some 50x75 rhs under the channel but I thought I might get some opinions on the subject.

Hi, I can't see why you can't paint the back section white and have your lights and number plate within the channel section as the way I read it, it doesn't say anything about it being unbroken.

Thanks kryn, I ended up adding a length of 50x75 rhs under the channel, will get it registered this week hopefully.

Remember too, that with a great many vehicles due to length you are entitled to have "do not pass turning vehicle" signage on the rear of the trailer.

Part of that signage is the option of having red and yellow zebra plates on the back of the trailer. there are different formats to accomodate a variety of vehicles.
