Wheel adapters for trailers, are they legal in Victoria?
Hi all,
Just wondering if wheel adaptors fitted to a trailer would be legal in Victoria. Reason being I have an old trailer here which seems to be fitted with some old Volkswagen Bus wheels. Now the tyres on there are old and require replacing, I couldn't find any numbers on there (wouldn't surprise me if it was an original tyre from the 1950's lol. They are 15" wheels and from google research I can fit a tyre up to 205 wide on them.
I noticed that you can get wheel adaptors to fit ford wheels onto them which would be an advantage as I have some ford spares around that would suit a trailer. Also would depend on the cost of the adaptors as whether it is worth doing or not.

Yeh! I would hate to think what the fine would be now, given the massive jump in fines in SA
Ended up a overall nightmare defected on the spot would not allow it to be towed had to be a tilt tray, then would have to go to Regency pk to have the defect removed another $250 fee.
Mate ended up up using as a farm trailer.

You could probably replace the axle and hubs for about the same price as adapters. Might get away with hubs only if they've got common ford or holden bearings.

I thought about that, but this is a drop axle which would probably be an advantage. I will have to measure to see if I can just change the hubs, that would be a lot cheaper. Is there any measurements out there for the ford/holden bearings so I can compare with mine.
Thanks

You could also look a bit further afield. I found out by accident that Magna wheels fit on Ford hubs for example. In any case, whatever common hub you find to fit, the tyres from your Ford spares may fit wheels from other common makes.

Might also be possible to re drill the hubs to a new pcd. That would depend on the design of the hub if it's suitable.
There are 14" rims to suit VW wide 5 stud pattern too as jhovel suggests, you just have to hunt around a bit.
Here's some on ebay https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VW-Split...EAAOSwQS1Z6we0

Thanks for the measurements, I will measure up mine when I have a bit of time. Hopefully I get get away with a hub swap. If not I suppose it is not that big of a deal to just put new tyres on the VW rims I have here. I would fit 205's to them as that seems to be the maximum. I suppose profile won't matter to much, something common.
