    Default Welding gal

What are the differences between welding 50x25x1.6 mild steel and the same in gal? can a stick do a proper job or do I need something else like a mig? I vaguely remember welding gal many moons ago and I seem to recall splatter was the order of the day.

Either grind the gal coating off or run the rod over the area a couple ot times to burn off the gal , wire brush clean and away you go

Yep their usually enough , you can see the gal flaking off as you go , just remember to give the weld a coat of cold gal after you finish or you produce a sacrificisl area that attracts rust

And as another note, other members have suggested that breathing in gal fumes from welding is a rather bad thing, I havnt experienced the things that they say make it bad, but i'll take there word for it.

It can be really nasty stuff ,

I welded the crap for a long while making Cyclone brand gates. The hot dipped zinc on gal pipes is particularly bad as it is very thick.
It can induce what approximates a fever and in those who suffer bronchial problems has been known to contribute towards their death.

We were given access to drink bottles of milk but if I remember the info in the booklet produced by the AMWU on hazardous metals in the metalwork industry found that that is largely ineffective .

If you are going to weld it at the very least ,use a good fan behind you to blow the fumes away.Other wise get a very good respirator

    Gidday

At work we just weld over it like anything else IF theres things to be done in volume we wear a respirator! just make sure to burn in with your arc n bear in mind there'll be lots a spatter................U may want to manage this if the appearence of your welds is important
