    Default Transmig 350 EC

Hi folks, I have an elderly Transmig 350 EC with remote current/voltage control and Transmatic 1 remote feeder. It was made in 1989 and still makes fantastic smooth deep welds, so I don’t want to (and can’t afford to!) replace it. And I have (almost) enough 3-phase current to run it. My only issue is that as soon as power is applied the gas solenoid opens, and as I generally use it for medium hobby fabrication (4x4 mods etc, making a slabbing mill etc) it chews through heaps of argoshield while I’m setting up, moving work, pondering and cursing, etc. I’m not sure if the solenoid is meant to be full-time open, or only when the gun’s trigger is on (ie: actually throwing an arc), or whether it’s changeable. I’ve had a look at the main circuit board but it’s a complex beastie with a load of on-board links and tracing the circuit (I did start!) would take days. And I’d probably get it wrong. So, I was wondering if there’s any chance anyone has a circuit diagram, or a service manual, or even memories of, this model? I'd even be happy to see a sales brochure with a picture (the front panel marking's missing for a couple of the switches, I'm pretty sure I know what they do (it's been welding fine for years), but still... If so I’d love to get my hands on a copy. I’m quite happy to pay if one’s available. I've sent an email to CIGweld but I don't have much hope... cheers, Terry

    Default Problem solved

Wow, I emailed CIGweld this morning and they replied almost instantly with both the operation and service manuals in pdf form. Amazing service for a new machine, let alone one entering it's 21st year.... And for reference, the switch on the front panel that was labelled SET and "Something else illegible" is Set and Weld - you put it in SET to set the gas flow (solenoid always on), Weld turns the solenoid on only when current flows Doh!. I'm a very happy boy....

    Hi Terry.
Do you still have the manuals that CIG sent you.
I have the same welder which has just thrown in the towel and refuses to start the wire feed unit yet the feed switch on the front still activates the motor.
If you can help I would be very grateful.
    Regards, David

    Hi David,
yes still have the manuals. The troubleshooting bit for wire feed says if the wire can be inched but doesn't feed when the torch switch is initiated, the torch switch or contriol cable is disconnected. I'd try bridging the 2 switch connectors at the welder (the light wire that plugs into 2 spade connectors on the gun cable plug) to check the torch switch - I had 3 guns, 2 had broken switch wires at the switch inside the gun. Also check the 2 fuses on the front panel (although probably OK if the inch feed works). Hope that helps, let me know if you need more.cheers,
    Terry

    Hi Terry.
Thanks for getting back to me so quick.
Did try all things you mentioned including testing cables with multimeter but to no avail.
Would it be possible to email the manuals to me as I need to get the welder going urgently?

    G'day David,
I was interested to read your post as I have exactly the same problem.
Mine is an older machine - probably the same vintage as yours - and is in very good condition. My "inch" feed works flat out but the trigger feed is very very slow even when the feed dial is turned to max.
    I would appreaciate any info,
    Thanks,
    Regards
    Dane

    Hi Telnz,
I'm having a little problem with my wire feed on my Transmig 350 and mate, if you could forward me a copy of those operation and service manuals, I'd be really grateful.
    Best regards
    Dane

    Default 350EC Welder

    Hi Dane
My problem turned out to be crumbling insulation on the wiring loom in the wire feed unit and once renewed it worked fine (wiring was shorting out).
Hope this may be of assistance.
    Regards
    David

    Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I'd already fixed the wiring but the problem is still there.
I'll find the pro I guess.
    Regards Dane.

Can anyone please send me the CIG manuals plus wiring & repair manuals. I'm very interested to see how the 'EC' Electronic Control works. Thanks.

    perrished wires fixed
I also had a thyristor short and have now replaced both modules with indivual thyristors
the machine works but the wire speed seems to be constant varing the voltage does not appeare to change the speed of the wire
I know this is an old thread but it relevent thanks
