Thanks China,
I stand corrected.
However the gist of the message is still there. I am talking longevity ,reliability, that sort of thing.
Going right back to the original post.
The mig failed as the plastic wire driver cage or frame was made of plastic. It was cheaper to make than using an alloy casting. The plastics fail due to UV light breaking down the plastic. The plastic does not need to be in the continuous sun, just light.

Having just come back from a window shop, the Cigweld retailers are differentiating between the current Transmig and Weldskill range of models, the difference supposedly being commercial / heavy industrial use Verses hobbyist / light industrial use respectively. There is a difference in price, and apparently quality, between the Transmig 175i ($1049) and the Weldskill 185 3in1 ($629). Very similar in size and power rating but obviously something is different internally. These are Total Tools prices as of today. Mitre 10 are actually selling the Weldskill 185 3in1 for $612 online and I could use Afterpay and possibly go through my wife's Cash Rewards to receive a further cashback discount.
Gasweld recommend the Unimig Viper 150 (reduced to $519) but they are still dearer than eWelders ($439). Both stores are local here in Gosford so easy to say where I'd go for that one. The Viper 182 is available online with free delivery for $499 (Trade Tools) and the Viper 185 at $649 (Get Tools Direct).
My old 130 Twin was badged Transmig with an A****** serial number meaning it was built in Australia (possibly Preston VIC) but probably at a time when cost cutting was beginning to set in and hence the plastic feed mechanism. Being an internal part (ie; inside the usually closed case) and with the whole welder machine kept in a shed, it is unlikely to have been subjected to much UV light. I'd say the brittleness of this plastic part is due quite simply to age. It was only held in place by 2 locator tabs and 2 pop rivets, and where it actually broke apart does not indicate expansion / contraction failure. Just bad plastic and manufactured failure point (IMO).

A couple of random comments:
I wouldn't buy anything from Edisons on Ebay - they used to be AGR Machinery and were famous for threatening buyers with no warranty or after-sales support if you left any kind of negative feedback on what was often dead-on-arrival junk. Once the word started to get around (on Google that is - try a search on AGR Machinery) , they re-named themselves to Edisons.
I've always liked the look of the Cigweld Transmig gear, but never used it.
Without feedback from actual users, I wouldn't trust any UniMig machine that doesn't have "Jasic" on the side.
I'd seriously consider looking at the Bossweld machines in Bunnings - while I haven't heard anything about them, Bunnings have fairly generous return policies if it turns out to be a POS, and the "manufacturer", or more correctly, importer (Dynaweld), also handles decent brands like Kobelco, so I'm inclined to trust them marginally more.

RustyArc, that is an amazing business model. I spent a few hours reading over reviews and complaints. I will never touch a Rossi welder or anything else from Edisons. I watched some video and read reviews on the 416 Plasma cutter / welder and it was crazy that it had to be immediately modified with improved fittings straight out of the box before you can even consider using it.
How do you know which Unimig products are associated with Jasic? I can't seem to find any info there. Unimig seem to have 2 product lines, Viper and Razorweld but there is little to explain what the differences (if any) are. I quite like the look of the Viper 185.

I have considered the Bossweld and the one I looked at in Gasweld yesterday seemed to be a well presented machine.
I'm still liking the look of the Cigweld though (even if I'm not sure they deserve brand loyalty). The Weldskill 185 is appealing to me at $612 (DIY/Trade) but I do like the possible quality / performance improvement of the Transmig 175i (Industry). There is one available 2nd hand but essentially unused for a reasonable price, however it was first purchased a few years ago now. Used for only a very small amount of Gasless 0.8 wire in MIG mode and then put away. It is a fair distance to travel and get it so I'm not sure about the risk of buying it at the asking price. I'm trying to talk the guy down a bit more. There is a 2nd hand, well used one for only $450 and one that was bought and never used for $800 but distance prevents these from being an option.

OK, I was wrong. I now have one, although I don't necessarily intend on keeping it. (maybe) It is very light and could be a good portable machine to carry around the yard.
I have obtained a Rossi MIG 185E as part of a package at a price I thought justified the purchase. I was mainly buying the welding trolley and a Speedgas D sized bottle that contains still around 50 % gas fill. With this in mind the welder itself was better than free and it means I'll be able to return my Coregas bottle to Bunnings for my $200 refundable deposit. If I sell the welder off, whatever I can get for it will be a further saving, so I'd be happy with that.
In saying this though, the welder actually works fairly well from first impressions, albeit noticeably cheap in certain ways. There is already a thread discussing this actual model so I will make some further comments there.

Way off topic now, but I was pleasantly surprised by AGR once. I had one of their concrete vibrators and we were using it in saltwater, mud and all sort of crap (to vibrate tubes into estuary sediments) - never got washed, except in salt water. The thing got so rusted up it wasn't funny. Anyway, one of the so called bearings rusted up completely on the lower half so I rang them up to buy a replacement. They sent out a whole new half of the machine, free. Didn't even charge postage.
As far as buying a welder from them? yeah... nah.

To be fair, for the only thing we've bought off them, they were happy enough to send out a spare part for free. From what I've read, it's when you want them to rectify a fault, or have a DOA unit you want replaced without paying for freight both ways, is where they're less than accommodating.

But if you had a DOA, would you be ok with paying two way freight from wherever? I wouldn't.

That is the point. If it's DOA it should not cost the purchaser anything. RustyArc, your comment appears to suggest that they are less than accommodating in this situation, hence my comment. My apology if I've read it wrong, (I don't think I did).

I always thought anything on ebay the buyer has to pay return shipping, ebay has just in the last few weeks bought out a free return system for ebay buyers

I just buy everything using paypal, if something's not right I give the seller 1 week to fix it, if no good then I say I'll raise a paypal dispute to get my money back. I don't think I've had one unresolved issue after using that threat. If they want the dud/wrong item back I tell them to organise a courier to collect it as I have a 'condition' that makes it impossible for me to go to the post office.
