Default How to adjust burn back on Unimig Razor weld Smart Set 205

Hi, I can't for the life of me work out how to adjust the burn back feature on the Unimig Razor weld Smart Set 205, any help would be appreciated? Currently when using the Mig setting, when I release the trigger about 7cm of wire comes out.
    Thanks Penny

I also wonder if you are using a new roll of wire, whether the spindle tension needs to be increased slightly. The inertia that the roll has may cause it to travel on a little after it is meant to stop. Just a thought - I'm a TIG person myself.

Hi Michael, thanks for thr tip, it is new spool wire and new welder. Played with wire tension too loose (1) no contact and no wire, tried in 1/2 turn increments until I got spark but then had same result with excessive wire run out post release of trigger. Any other suggestions

Hi PennyN and welcome to the Forums.
Setting up the wire feed on a new machine by an inexperienced welder can be difficult. People new to solid wire welding do not realise wire feed settings are more complicated than just setting amperage as per stick welding.

There are some addittional factors that need to be considered before setting the burn back.

Some factors that impact upon this process are:

    * An extremely good earth connection- shiny base metal to clean earth return-very important.

    * Check or adjust the drag tension nut/spring assembly on the wire coil spindle. This was previously mentioned and it is important to know the the coil spool must be set to where it won't overoll when trigger is released or won't be too tight and drag against the momentum of the wire feed wheels.

*Set the wire feed and voltage control. I recommend a look at the Miller site https://www.millerwelds.com/resource...ect-parameters

*Wire feed rolls set at a suitable pressure. Progressively loosen the wire drive wheel tensioner screw until you are just able to grip the wire between thumb and forefinger as the wire is passing through the rolls.
You should be able to make the wire slip in the rolls and stop wire travel outright.

The burnback setting is relative to the particular metal thickness/wire feed settings so, therefore, should be adjusted only after all of the above have been checked or adjusted.Burnback is simply supplying the wire with electric current for a small length of time. Not knowing your machine I would say somewhere between low and half way setting is a good place to begin.

    I hope this helps you

I just had a look through the manual and there seems to be no adjustable burn back function on this welder.

There is switch inside the wire feed compartment to select spoolgun/standard Is it set to standard?

If you disconnect the wire from the drive rolls and press and release the trigger, do the drive rolls stop rotating pretty much instantly or do they still rotate for a little while?

Did you buy this machine new and has it always had this issue?

Hi Grahame, thanks for your post and the effort you put into it, i am glad ro say that I did problem solve with everything you said and then a friend who is a welders checked everything and all is good. A rep from the company is going to come and visit. I went back to where I brought it and they thought it might be the trigger on the mig touch but a new touch but still had the same issue.

yeah to me it is sounding like a pcb fault. It's good to know that the Unimig rep is coming down to have a look.

I think the rep's name is Bill or something? He came over to my place and ran me through my new UniMig TIG machine. I'm not sure if other brand reps do this kind of thing, but I was impressed.

Why should it be a secret, shouldn't it be documented in the manual if it is possible to do?
