weld strength opinion
Someone gave me this chair recently, and my paranoid self is now questioning it's design. (not a welder personally)
When I sit my 140 lbs in it, all 4 pins slide out about an additional 1/2", meaning the bulk of the weight on the welds is actually being torqued horizontally, not vertically like you would sort of expect for a chair.
Is this going to metal fatigue eventually ?
I've seen / used this hairpin design many times but it's not usually such a steep angle that the legs splay out like this.

Paranoia Intensifies...
Is it hollow tube or solid rod?
The chairs I've seen like that are all solid rod, maybe 10mm dia.
Welds have wormholes and looks like a few sins are covered in the powdercoating, but I think a lot of the deflection is in the material, rather than the weld.
If it helps you sleep of a night, 170lb is not much to expect of a chair. I'd give it a clean bill of health.

Welcome to our MetalWork Forum.
You do realise that our forum is Australian based and most of us don't use the imperial system. Old farts like me can still recognise it and convert back and forward.
Pins? Or legs?
With your weight no, but say with someone whose weight is substantially greater than your own, possibly might induce a collapse.
Should that be the case, I would expect a colossal number of deflections before any failure occurred.
The hairpin design has been around for many years and has proven to be reliable.
If you are truly worried get somebody familiar with welding/metalwork to inspect the chair.
