Default Which paint for welds on galv?

    Hello All
I've been using Wattyl Cold Galvit aerosol on my welds on galvanised pipe farm gates, yards etc
Before spraying it on, I clean up the weld and HAZ with a wire wheel in a drill. Then I apply 3 coats 24 hours apart.
After a while ( 3 -5 years) the welds start rusting.
Can anyone point me to a superior product?
    TIA
    Graeme

    Welcome to the Forum Graeme.

3/5 years is not that bad considering they're outside fully exposed to the weather.
    Bunbury, anywhere near the beach?
If the welds aren't smooth and allow water to sit in the welds that won't help.
For outside I usually use brush on cold galv as it produces a much thicker coating.

What are you using for a top coat? I remember being told once that primers can have some porosity to them, so a top coat should be used to seal them.

If my memory serves me correct, cold galv paint has to be about 1mm thick to afford the same protection as hot dipped Galvanising. It was brushed on.This was about 50 years ago on a grain silo construction site at Pt Giles on the Yorke Peninsula.

You need to use brush on cold gal followed by an aerosol spray to seal. I’ve had good results following this regime at my uncle’s farm, not as shiny after several years but no rust showing. The only spots showing rust is where the livestock has worn the paint and also the original gal coating away
