    Default Oxy kit

Just had a look at the total tools catalog that gets sent out to me all the time.

Is the a really good deal

I've been after an oxy kit for ages for home use around the workshop.
I'm only going to be using it for light gauge work sheet metal, annealing brazing kind of stuff.
I haven't used a oxy kit in over 15 years but I was quite comfortable using one when I was using then.(ex panel beater)
    So no problems there
I know the deal about the bottles these days and don't have a problem there either
Especially considering the days of old with the bloody rental charges from some

    Cheers Matt

I think the Colt is a mini size and comet is standard size for CIG.
This relates to the overall hand piece size.
    But I could be wrong.

It's hard to tell from the pic but it looks like the kind of kit I use to use and have.

Look the same yet smaller, don’t know if there is any functional difference as a result.

Well if that's the case, a smaller torch might suit my more delicate nature.Oxy kit

Hi Guys, the colt is the smaller of the 2, every bit as functional as its bigger sibling.
The cutting capacity is a bit thinner material from memory.
I don't think you have a delicate nature, Matt.

The Comet 3 blowpipe is easier to hold for me. I have an oldish Comet 3 blowpipe which I purchased around 45 years ago when I bought my Comet 3 kit. It has been refurbished three times since then and is still going strong. My Men's Shed has the Cutskill Colt, which looks pretty much like what you are showing. The blowpipe controls are spaced sort of like Micky Mouse ears and in one instance I had issues with one of the controls getting in the way. The Comet 3 blowpipe is ergonomically easier for me to use and the controls are tucked well out of the way The Comet 3 blowpipe is the top of the range and what it can do certainly bears that out; along with the price of the Comet 3 blowpipe, it must be said.

I would suggest this kit is perfect for almost anything you would wish to do. You do not even wish to know the price of the comet 3 kit all those decades ago, unbelievably expensive comes to mind; worth it though. Kits like this one, are extremely cheap by comparison.

My thoughts are to get 10m hoses if a kit is available with them, best thing I ever did. I procrastinated over the second last changeover hoses and stayed with 5m hoses, currently I have 10m hoses which I fitted last time. Should have done it years ago as the price difference between 5m and 10m hoses is very small.

I have also switched one set of goggles over to gold coated, certainly takes a fair bit of the heat out of your eyes if standing/leaning directly over the weld.

The Bunnings oxy/aceteylene via Coregas has a pretty good matched set of oxy/acetylene bottle sizes for their changeover system. Compared to either CIG (20 years use) or Supagas (21 years use) where one bottle was so much smaller it was a great day if one could make it through a heavy welding day. For handyman use anything is great, but I have found the Coregas bottles to be fantastic, been using them for around 4 years now.

If it will do what you want, then at that price, it is certainly a good buy.

That said, once you work out exactly what accessories are needed, what accessories are nice, then look at the prices around the traps. It is within the ball park of pricing that our Men's Shed paid two years ago for what looks to about the same kit; 5m hoses though.

By the way I use oxy + lpg. It will do everything that acetylene will with the exception of fusion welding steel.
