    Hi joez,

I am sure more than a few would appreciate a review of the pencils when you get them.

I am curious as to how fine the point is- ie will it be as fine as a sharpened soapstone.?

When the point of the pencil becomes blunt how is it repointed - is there a sharpener?

    Thanks for posting

The Amazon listing says built-in sharpener. I am tempted myself. "Marks on oily, wet or rusty metals, and will not scratch or abrade surfaces". I have a couple of Milwalkee fine point textas that are meant to write on most surfaces, but like all textas these days they don't last very long.

There is a long point Sharpie (I think) that is designed to reach down into holes such as for marking gaskets, that I had tried to get some time back. I did not think of Amazon. I have bough one or two items from there, but most stuff I have looked at is not sent to Oz. Nothing worth worrying about arranging on-shipping tho.

That pen looks similar to the Stadelar refill drawing pencil. The sharpener is the push/click lead advancer thingo. Refills for that marker may fit my Stadelar

Do your Staedtler (?) refills write on oily/wet etc surfaces like the Markel ones listed?

The Steadtler clasp pencils were basically a glorified lead pencil. They were used tech drawing BC (before computers) on paper and for marking woodwork.

The closest thing to metalwork markout might be mark out lines on sheet zinc annealed. Certainly not likely to to work on oily wet surfaces. That begs the next question, why would one want to mark on oily wet surfaces?

From memory the refill lead was about 2.5 mm or thereabouts in diameter.

I believe Dingo Dog is asking do the refills for Markal fit his Steadtler clutch pencil. I had exactly the same thought and went searching on line but was unable to find a diameter for the Markal refills.

Because the surface you want to mark happens to be oily or wet. It happens quite a bit to me and trying to use a normal marker on oily, wet or dusty surfaces usually results in the marker refusing to work at all for a while. Seems to get the sulks. Oil or water from milling, turning, cutting etc are the usual culprits.

    Dean..

Never said they did mate, just saying they look like the Stadelar pen, meaning, what you put in the Marval may fit the Stadelar, they take thick leads.

Should I apologise for asking a simple question then? A simple "no they don't" would suffice.

I bought a set of three welders pencils from the US on eBay quite a while ago. As usual the US mail charges unbelievable amounts for postage. at the moment they are $6 for the pencils and $28 for postage. I only only paid $20 so it pays to shop around. Interestingly no Aussie sellers were offering them at the time and Total Tools had no idea what they are.
They look like ordinary pencils but with a silver lead and are easily sharpened with a pencil sharpener so I assume the replacement leads for the mechanical pencils have the same lead as in the pencils.

I had a quick play with them today, the pen body is not as good as Stadelars, but good enough for welding.

The lead is similar to the old chinagraph pencils but about 50% harder. I measured them with calipers and they were 2.4mm,
    Stadelar's are 2mm I think.

The lid has a built in sharpener but compared to Using a black marker it's sharper even without it.

I found the markers easier to see and slightly more durable than soapstone.

IMO they are a handy bit of kit for marking out, but I wouldn't pay $30 for one.

Southern Cross Industrial Supplies at Edwardstown had them in stock when I bought mine from them.

I think it was Bob The Welder I bought some welder pencils from. Be a couple of years ago. I couldn't see the marks when welding tho.
