Yes, building trailers is an expensive business, I've built a few boat/canoe trailers and a few box trailers as well. There are plenty of places around that sell the parts: axles, springs, brakes, even sheet metal parts, but as already stated the parts are expensive. The last trailer I built was for a Hobie Adventure Island, I bought all the parts via ebay as it was cheaper than buying local. The job I did before that was fitting disk brakes to a camper trailer. Bought them from Vic via ebay as it was the cheapest. I think it probably cost me more for the parts than I could have got a local to do the job, but hey, homebuilt is always better.

I've always used stick so I can't comment on whether Mig is better/worse. I much prefer stick anyway so it's a moot point!

    Thanks again everyone, great advice.

I look to build 1 trailer a fortnight, I have 4 trailers to build for mates at cost prices including welding expenses so I guess this will show me if its worth it or not.

as for parts my mate runs a trailer business and builds a lot of trailers and his happy for me to use his account which will help with prices.

after mates trailers are done and a flat bed steel tray il start building a custom boat trailer for myself, get the practice on me mates trailers first hahahaha

end of the day its not for bread just toys n hobbies & just to be handy with steel,
    cheers
