I got all my pieces cut/notched and cleaned ready to weld i have so far both completed sides i just need to square up both sides and weld on the top and back pipes than shes ready to fit

i have came up with a idea where the 4 canopy legs of the 32mm round tube will slot into 4x 40mm square tubing bases that will be bolted to the boat than i will use 4 quick remove pins to lock the canopy in place

this will allow me to remove the canopy for towing and place it within the boats seating area and only erect it while at the boat ramp

as for the Chinese spool guns on ebay for $50-$100 they do work and they do work well but there are some teething problems, i have mine wired to my ESAB mig 150, i found the included spool is much thinner than the stock spools we purchase from the welding supply stores so i removed the spool stud and screwed in a M8 bolt which holds on the .5kg alloy wire spool but this creates a problem the small gold spool stopper binds on the inner .5kg spool so u may need to modify it

the other option is re-spooling the Chinese spool gun spool with wire Ha good luck with that

i went with the easiest possibly design to build as pictured, also the Hare and Forbes pipe notcher worked great with a 32mm LENNCO i think branded hole saw bit, my fit up's were 95%+ and very easy to weld

I have wound wire (steel) from a 1kg spool to a 4.5kg spool without any issues. I used my lathe to do the winding. You just need a bit of pressure on the delivery spool to stop it spinning wildly and causing a birds nest. You also need to stop before the end gets loose also causing a birds nest. The VFD on the lathe made this simple.

No progress today i thought it was going to rain

Hey Dean, I don't have a lathe mate, i was thinking of running a bolt thru the empty spool and chucking it on the bench drill low speed to spool it up

That will work. Make the bolt tightness so you can stop the spool by gripping the wire. Maybe use a spring. Easiest to have a clamping device a distance from the spool so you can apply some pressure to the wire to hold the tension then you can just control the position of the wire on the spool with your fingers. Clamp the wire between some bits of leather or similar.
