Thread: How to get square cornered welds

i'm not sure what the forces are in a firebox, but expansion and contraction would be one.
with 6 mm gaps i would be tempted to slug it. ie lay a piece of mild steel rod in there and weld in.
otherwise you will have to "cold butter" it to bring edges together. cold butter like you did edges.
if the forces of heat cycling are not significant then laying filler rod in there could work too. lay extra rods with their flux removed in the gaps and melt them in.
hammer the flux off on an anvil or similar piece of concrete haha
looks like a great project !

Thanks meadow street. I'll take your advice on the strips. It's only that wide for a short distance thankfully. I'm about to go and weld it up now, so I'll post the results tonight.
I don't think that expansion and contraction should be much of an issue because the whole system should expand and contract uniformly. The firebox is to be lined with insulating firebricks.
