Default Metalmaster 210S or Lincoln Speedtec 200C???

Ok I know how much everyone hates posts about what welder to buy, but I have narrowed the choices down to these 2 and need help with the final choice. Lincoln is $100 more expensive and doesn't come with as many "bits" as 210S. But is it a better welder overall?

I plan on keeping the unit for a very long time so the 5 year warranty of the 210s is appealing. I have a dedicated TIG machine so don't really need that function but it would be nice to have if i was to take the unit somewhere other than home to do a job.

Please let me know your thoughts.

    Hi Charger176,

    Firstly Welcome to the forum.
    .

What you must consider also is warranty, after sales service ,product support, availability of spare parts after the warranty period and how well the seller's infrastructure can deal with you welders repair, if so needed.

Lincoln is one of the top shelf brands or at least once was. I can't speak for the present Lincoln but years back they were impeccable for parts being available a very long period of time.

Lincoln these days has their welders were everyone else makes them-in cheap labour countries-

Token Tools has been around for a decade and is headed by an electrician who is an electrical engineer who designs the welders, has them made to his specs and has a bricks and mortar shop where staff can repair the ones that may fail out of warranty. The owner is very approachable and helpful.

A lot from this forum have purchased Token tools welders on this site and they have an excellent word of mouth name.

Use the forum search function and read up on Token tool (posts ) as theres quite a few posts over the years on them and nothing bad from memory.
I believe Token Tools welders to be excellent quality and value for money value.

I've only had a poke at the 200C in the shop - not really looking for a new MIG machine, but always interested in what's out there. The big thing that I noticed was that the wire feed assembly is plastic, and while it could well be a fancy, super-strong glass-filled whatever, it looked a bit chintzy. I'd be looking for some reviews on the unit before diving in. I get the impression it might different to the equivalent unit sold in the US.

That is a very good point about the wire feed assembly Rusty arc.

The wire feeder is the heart of the system and as such it must be rigid enough to maintain constant pressure against the wire consumable.

It is another indicator of a cheapening of the what should be otherwise good brand name ,machine.

Its silly I know but I feel that one should be able to expect that a machine last a bloody long time after having paid a substantial price for it.

Plastic items as most of us know can lose the oils and suffer from oxidisation over the years and degrade. I really hate plastic with a passion for that particular reason. plastic handles and knobs are another thing but the machine will soldier on if the knobs or handles are broken but not the the wire feeder.

The wire feed frame that contains the drive wheels is one part of the machine which is subject to a stress being under spring tension all of the time. Even though the pressure is not high over the years , the frame assembly could break or more likely deform under pressure. Indeed some may say but its a special plastic and won't break I would be happier with a machine that has a cast alloy feeder assembly.

Having said that, I am unaware of the materials that the other machine uses as for the wire feeder unit. A quick phone call to Token Tools would sort it out.

Thank you Graeme and Rusty. I didn't realise the feed roller housing was plastic. That is a pretty big hurdle to overcome for the Lincoln! I appreciate you both helping out.

I have a 210S, im still on my first roll of 5Kg wire, but I am very happy with it so far. if you want any pics of the internals let me know.

I had a hard time deciding on what to get as well, in the end the support from Token won me over. I had a hard time even locating a Lincoln unit to look at, and my local supplier was more interested in pushing me to buy their house brand instead. I hate think think what would happen if I needed their support.

Thanks Joe. Seems like the 210S is going to be the one.

I'm pretty sure my MIG machine is the 210S - I've had it for a number of years now and have no complaints. I also have the spool gun that TT sells with it. I weld steel and aluminium with this setup. I'm sure if you did the search that Grahame suggested you will have come across a few of my previous posts.
    Cheers
