Need help - welding on trailer hinges - Canberra
I've just about finished my box trailer renovation, all done but I've got to weld the new barrel hinges I have here onto the two trailer gates. The old hinges rusted to seizure down the coast, I had to grind them off.
I'm ready to go, so I went on to Gumtree where a fellow nearby in northside Canberra had been advertising small backyard jobs, he'd said $30 to do the job. Great, but that was last October and now I'm back on Gumtree he's nowhere to be found. I never did get his mobile nr or anything. So that's a dead end.
Well now I'm stuck, the trailer gate metal is just 1.6mm thick so I can't use my old arc welder, that would just blow the metal away. I need someone with a mig or tig welder willing to take a few dollars if I spin around with the box trailer. Anyone?

If you don't have success welding to the sheet, may I suggest another approach?
I don't like those barrel style hinges on trailers. They are troublesome even when new and worse as they wear and get rusty.
As an alternative, I prefer to use some pieces of flat bar about 6x30, drill them for 10mm bolts, nyloc nuts & washers near the ends - there's your hinges.
These could be more easily welded to your steel angle frame.
I thought mine could wear out after a while, but many years later they're still good.
I'd take a photo, but someone's borrowed my trailer.

No reason why you can't weld 1.6mm with a arc welder, just use a series of short runs inked together I have done this on many occasions then if you want you can run a cover pass over the top.

If you don't find a better option, I'd be happy to have a go at it in exchange for a 6-pack of a decent IPA.

Pialligo's pretty good. I'm no expert on the ales either, but the California IPAs seem to get great reviews - but so many distinctive tastes and it all seems to come down to individual preference - maybe we could have a go with them and see what the fuss is all about. If no good, it'll make great snail bait. I'll send you a PM anyway.
Ueee, thanks too for offering a hand. Actually do you have a way to cut internal keyways? I've got a vertical milling head in bits here that I'm stuck on for want of 3/16" keyways on the replacement drive gears. Maybe I should PM you about that.

Ewan, send me a PM if you haven't; I have and can send tools across if it helps.
