They make Durafix rods now for aluminium Not cheap though. I pay $7 a rod.

What about an entirely different approach? Internal connectors in many configurations are readily available.
It might be a great deal less messing about, unless of course part of the school project outcome is to weld or braze aluminium tube.
If you really must weld or braze, at least do a practice.
Some of the lighter box sections are coated - not sure if its anodizing or something else. Bloody awful to join even despite cleaning off this crap.
What ever it is can be a real PITA to weld and braze. A few scrap practice sections are advised before committing to some possibly expensive tube that might not be weldable.
