Welding at night any tips and tricks?
Hey Guys
looking to do a bit of night welding if possibly just to save on argon using sold wire outdoors, night time there is little to no wind
can anyone offer some advice on lighting, where to position the lighting, what lighting works best and so on?
i tried googling for help on night welding but it only gave pages of night welding course's

Keep the light away from your back, you will get a reflection in your hood and it will you. A couple fluro lights or leds will be fine, you may need to up the sensativity on your hood to stop it darkening from the light.
Personaly i like to weld in the dark with no lights. Helps me focus and see a bit better.

You can buy led floor lamps that light up the area like day time from chain hardware stores. Like this:

Wouldn't it be easier to erect a wind-break and weld during the day?

I went to bunnings to see what they have and found a 500watt halogen light which is portable its working great and with some left over aluminium i plan on building a stand for the light so i can cover a broader area
i didn't want to invest to much money into a light because i wasn't sure if i would be able to weld or even see at night but so far its working very nicely indeed the only thing the neighbours may complain about the welding noise but it only last 2mins for the duty cycle every 10mins
i was welding earlier today while there was no wind than later in the afternoon the wind kicked up so i packed up and unpacked again just before dark, i was using double the amount of argon welding during the day than i am now at 8pm
Gavin what sort of wind breaker do u have in mind? i thought about using a gazebo but they are costly $150+ and it could be a fire hazard

I just have some old sheets of plywood with gate type hinges attached so I can link them together to be self standing and arranged to suit the needs of the job site.

One thing I found with night welding is that you need to hold the solar panel on your welding helmet in front of a light for a bit to make sure it's charged.
Nothing worse than the auto darkening not working on that first strike.
Dave.

Maybe affix one of those LED lenser head lamps to your helmet I reckon they would be bright enough too see even while your welding, they are brilliant out camping and fishing
