Default Would this Cig mig be any good

I know you guys probably get sick of this newbie question but here it goes again:

Would this welder be any good for ocassional usage

Cigweld Welding, Mig Welder - 135 Amp - Supercheap Auto

I know it's not the bees knees but my position is I weld something about once a year so need to keep that in perspective. I'd just like to have something about for that rare time.

I've owned a stick welder for about 20 years and I've never got past it sticking. I hate it, and i hate all people who can actually use a stick welder.

So I guess my position is I want a cheap welder for ocassional use, don't want to buy off eBay etc, want a decent warrantee and somewhere I can take it back to face to face, but don't want to buy something that is nothing but trouble or fails to do basic welds.

    Also, must be 10amp.

I don't care if the welds are a bit messy, I don't mind shepherding it along a bit and don't anticipate ever doing big things.

I would like it to do thin materials though, not blast holes in things like the stick welder.

    Cheers
    Arron

    hi arron

for some one with a need to do some welding now and then it would be fine .

a friend has had one for quite a few years and had no trouble with it and taught him self to weld. uses it for his car restorations rust repairs ect.

this machine really only good for up to around 6mm max thickness metal to weld. would to good for light panel car type work 1mm to 5 to 6mm ect

for now and then use look on ebay for welding wire to use on this machine , for light gauge 1mm up to 5-6mm metal plate use 0.8 flux core wire no gas is

needed ebay price around $80 for a 5kg roll if you don't do much welding this roll of wire will last you for years.

with some practice mig is easy to learn , you will still blow holes with a mig on light metal its just a lot easier to fill patch holes the than with a stick welder

ps also buy a cig blue auto darkening helmet which has adjustable shades there not bad for the price and are a big help with learning to weld

    good luck Damien

Arron, Back around 14+ years ago i took on a huge project with no idea, i jumped in and sunk to within an inch of my head going under

back than portable welders were a lot harder to find and cost a lot more money to purchase than on today's market

the job was a Ford Festiva smashed up the rear corner and smashed front end/left corner, the car was only about 3 or 4 years old so it was worth while repairing, anyway i chopped off the front left quater cut and also the skin from the rear corner

i wasnt skilled in welding i had no prior experience with a MIG welder other than about 2mins on a sticky stick welder

i cut right thru the main chassis right thru the skirting i than took the two new quarter cuts from a scrapped car and welded those onto this Ford Festiva

i used one of these small portable CIGWeld welders to do all the welding, back than i hired it from Kennards Hire

the skirting would have been 1mm there about's in thickness, the skin on the rear quarter cut was even thinner and this welder welded it all fine it even welded the chassis rail enough the car passed a special RTA/RMS crashed car inspection

i donno the quality of the portable CIGWeld 135amp machines made today but back in the day they were some handle little welders

i have owned mostly Chinese welders due to the purchase cost but if u come across a nicely looked after quality used big brand name machine buy it u wont regret it, i find my latest purchase the ESAB i mentioned in my other thread is a totally new ball game changer to my MIG welding skills

also look into a machine that can weld stainless and aluminium if possible it will come in handy as a mate might come by one day and say bugger broke this or that and its aluminium you'll be able to help out and repair it for them
