Default Welding to an office style chair Gas Lift Spindle?

I'm looking to weld some 3mm pieces to mine without too much damage & not effect rotation of the chair. The idea is the welded pieces will hit the top of the spindle guide & give a ridged chair that still rotates. This contact will be smooth metal & greased up.

Can this type of metal be welded? Arc welder?

I assume the heat would damage the insides, if not burn through the outer casing, any dangers from the internal gas? What if the welding is done small sections at a time & long cool off periods?

Just won't to know if this is at all possible or just a bad idea that won't work?

    Thanks

There is a lot of pressure in those struts and no way would I strike an arc on one. You could possibly find a sleeve that will fit and weld your bits to that, (don't have it on the strut while you weld though).
There is great potential for death or injury when you muck around with pressure and heat.

I'd be inclined to dismantle the chair to weld it, just to make sure that the gas system is not in contact with the outer casing. Not pulled one apart to know for certain.

To grow old is mandatory, growing up is optional.
