    Default TIG welding gloves

Had my mate Mel over for a TIG tutorial yesterday and I learned quite a bit in the 90 minutes or so he was there. Mel was a welding inspector and then a Tafe welding instructor for a decade before he retired. One thing he pointed out was that my welding gloves (cowhide riggers gloves) are too thick and the wrist protection is insufficient for TIG work . When I tried out his special TIG gloves I noticed they were much thinner in the palm than mine and it was a lot easier to feel the torch and trigger plus handing the filler rod.

The last time there was a TIG glove thread was back in 2009 ( //metalworkforums.com/f160/t902...ghlight=gloves )
so my guess things might have changed since then.

From what I can tell they need to fit right and I would like to try them out before I buy..

I had a look on line and they start at a few $ and go up to silly money.
I am less worried about the price than I am about the fit.
eg Tigmate L TIG Welders Gloves TOP Quality Leather TIG Gloves Kevlar Stitched 1PR | eBay look sturdy and are well priced but look somewhat ill-fitting.

I see Bunnings has Weldcorp TIG gloves for $31 but these were not available in either of the two Bunnings stores I went to this morning - does anyone have these and are they any good, or can some one else recommend gloves I can buy locally from a welding shop or similar.

Bob, I have a pair of Tigmate welding gloves which I find very suitable. Inside there is a info tag noting they are from elliottaustralia.com size S which leads me to believe they should be available in possibly three sizes. There is also a smaller tag saying "100% leather, made in china". I am not a full time welder but have used them for a total of approx 10 hours, mainly on aluminium welding.
I can't recall where I bought them but it may have been Bob the Welder as I have purchased quite a few things from him over the years.
I have smallish hands and normally use Medium riggers gloves for general work but the Small size Tigmates fit me very well.
BTW I have a similar Token Tools Metalmaster AC/DC Tig machine to yours which I am very happy to have.
    Regards, Gerry

The last pair of good quality Tig gloves, I purchased were made out of pigskin. They are a very thin pair of gloves giving good feel through the leather to manipulate the filler rods.

Remember their primary purpose is to shield from radiation. For this reason I would look for longer gauntlet types as the short ones don't protect when shirt sleeves do ride up and a nasty radiation burn can result.

Unlike general welding gloves they should be used as tig welding gloves only.

If they are not used for materials handling - picking up hot weldments -use tongs or pliers and they will last a long time.

It is well worth while spending a few more dollars for them as they will last if you look after them.

I haven't found any decent ones that last. My left hand index finger and thumb wear holes in them really quick from feeding rod. Really quick. I've used the BOC blue ones, Tigmate ones, a few others. I like them paper thin and only use them for tig. Normally spend $20-30 a pair and go through 3-4 pairs a year just hobby welding. I'll keep looking.

I really do want to be able to try them on so I'll read over to BOC and take a look.

Thanks for the lead. I picked some up this morning on special for $14, so less than half the price of the Bunnings gloves plus the BOC ones fit a little better.

I found this thread after searching for info on welding gloves. BOC have the Weld Guard Premium TIG gloves on sale for $16.16+gst IF you have large hands. If you don't take a size L they are about $23+gst.

I'm looking for gloves for oxy-acetylene welding. I have a pair of blue welding gauntlets that are useless for welding with a filler rod because they provide no feel at all. Are TIG gloves the best option these days for oxy-acet welding?

If they're OK for TIG, can't see why they wouldn't be OK for oxy welding. Only one way to find out?

Me either China, but until recently I've only had oxy-lpg. The oxy-acet is new to me. I tried some fusion welding yesterday. After discarding the gauntlets I went "bareback" but found the heat was too much for the filler wire hand.
