It's about time we caught up with the rest of the world and scrapped the hire only monopoly, while I am not Bunnings fan I commend them for this, I believe a certain big name who hire in SA are so concerned they lodged a devolpement complaint in a attempt to stop it happening here which was not successfull, I am waiting until Feb/March for the Adelaide rollout, I have just returned my hire cylinders as the contract just expired

There are a number of other choices for mig and tig gasses, but to my knowledge bunnings/coregas is the only vendor offering acetylene on a swap and go basis.

If you want a mig/tig mix make it known to Bunnings if enough people want it and they can see a profit they will stock it I'm sure, Bunnings operate on a cut throat policy (if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen)

While it may indeed be possible that bunnings may go into shielding gasses in the future.....don't hold your breath.

Bunnings pitch squarely at the bulding industry......they are pitching at plumbers and fridgies.....a majority part of the remaining market for oxy /acetylene.....hence the D bottle.

Many plumbers and fridgies would be in Bunnings on a daily basis picking up plumbables and mounting hardware.

There is next to nill use of shielding gasses in the building industry.
And any shielding gass used in the bulding industry would be by those connected with the welding industry.

There are already a number of competitors.....and bottle exchange competitors....in the welding market that provide shielding gasses.....several of which do not supply in particular Acetlene.

    cheers

In your first post, don't you mean BOC
Anyhow, glad bunnings stock acet. bottles.Picked one up end of last year.Went to trade counter paid and received sales docket(need to photo copy this and file in safe place)Cashier says see Fred on the gate and he'll get you the bottle.Fred's busy Steve will sort it.Steve then hunts down the key for cage where bottles are stored(outside)in rear carpark. This is a northern suburbs store of Melbourne. As you know not all stores stock bottles, maybe they don't have the room or the "safety" facilities, which is where i'm leading to.Steve unlocks the cage and pulls out a bottle.I ask what's the go.He starts with well you pay 200 dollar...this is where I interupt with yeah I know all that.He asks me whataya mean?-Don't you need to check my vehicle?-What for?-adur SAFETY.-Nup.-So I can strap it in the back seat of my station wagon.-Nothing to do with me.Admittedly Steve only works there and wears a red shirt(star trek). Last weekend I gave this story an airing to a bloke I've met a few times and concluded that the only safety policy bunnings has on the release/handover of acet. bottle is the printed label on the side.He then told of a story that hit the headlines last year.He was having breakfast when all of sudden there was a loud bang.He walk outside thinking a crane had toppled over from the old Waverly(arctic) Park football ground.A pungent chemical odour hung in the air. Before long heaps of Cops Ambos, etc arrive. Now the incident was acetylene bottle explosion fro m back of trade vehicle.I remembered the bitching on news from the victims neighbours of how can ya store stuff so volatile in residential street blah blah blah.Turns out poor bugger was a young 18 year old plumbing apprentice who picked up acet. bottles end of previous day to deliver to another site that morning.Came out to back of van clicked his auto car lock and kaboom. The boy died that night in hospital.Tragic accident that shouldn't have happened. The oxy/acet. bottles he used regularly were safely stored in a transport cabinet. The bottle/s that expolded loose lying down in the back. What happen to the co. he work for,I don't know?
One thing I can say for BOC/CIG,in the past when I'd pick up a bottle,it would not leave the loading dock until the dispatcher was sure I had adequate transporting stowage. So if you pick up a bottle from bunnings and stick it in the back of your wagon or boot and get down the road and something nasty occurs you will be up sh@@ creek without a paddle. If you put it in your boot and something happens in bunnings carpark, who is responsible?Don't ask Steve cause lifes too short to worry about the finer details.
    Thanks for listening/reading.

I know that 2 years ago Blackwoods was looking at a gas swap of Coregas bottles, including mig/tig. I don't know if it ever got off the ground, but it may be worth checking it out. Coregas/Bunnings/Blackwoods are all Wesfarmers businesses. (Although, Blackwoods prices probably aren't going to be the cheapest).

How many people, when they go camping/BBQ day trip, store the gas bottle in the boot. Not a nice way to meet thy maker.
Wonder how long that will go on for before Govt. makes a ruling on it. Acetylene bottles should NEVER be laid down, regardless whether full or empty.
