Thread: Goggomobile Update

Hi all
Many thanks for all of the great posts on Goggomobile panels. Christmas and a broken foot has slowed me up but I'm back into it now.

Concourse or not to concourse that was the question. After much thought and a quick review of the finances I've decided concourse is not for me ... But I'll get close.

I've striped back the rust, bitumous paint and many layers to get to how the Goggo was originally fabricated .. To fully repair I would have to unwind a number of overlapping spot welded sheets. I've also found some repairs which will have to be unwound. I figure I just need to unpick the old spot welds with a spot weld drill. I've checked out the folder/punch tools ... Looks good will buy.

Below is the chassis and the RH old panel and a new back pan. The front pan is not available so I've made a pattern and will see if I can get someone to press out a similar shape.

Looks like your making progress.
Drilling out spot welds un picking panels you bring back memories off doing many hundred of them.
After awhile you get pretty good at them believe me.

What happened to the foot? Not one Chardonnay too many over Christmas I hope Nice work on the panels by the way

Have a look for people who do Hydroforming - probably the best bet for your front pan. (You may know that already)

Definetly a lot of chardy's over Xmas ... Was big over 20 here for 3-4 days.

Hydrforming .. Mm never heard of this. ... I know a guy at a local engineering fabrication place at Southport on the Gold Coast who has a big press and thinks he can get fairly close with the dimples ... Is this similar ? I was thinking of 16 gauge but the replacement pan is 18 gauge ... There are stiffeners which are not clear in the photos so I'm thing 18.

That's a BIG little car project Randel... There's a lot of rust to remove, was it a Gold Coast car? Cheers, crowie

Hydroforming is a process where a wooden or metal pattern is used, the sheet metal placed on top and then a thick rubber diaphragm is placed on top of that. The other side is pressurised with fluid (normally oil but the "Hydro" probably came from water) so the sheet metal conforms to the pattern. It's a much cheaper (in terms of tooling) way of making a short run of simple pressed metal parts.

One is a pain which ever way it is made but if you wanted several it would be ideal for that. Maybe worth looking at, especially if there is a Gogomobile club where a steady demand would mean that the tooling is used a number of times.

I wish I was brave enough and had the talent to take on this sort of project.

Iguess I'll just sit back and watch the progress from afar.

arrr the yellow Dart looks great .. Here are mine .. Not restored ..

The red Dart is in great Nic and will fit onto the same chasis as a Limosine (the sedan, thats what they are called true ..) .. All shells are Fibre Glass .. Interesting Australian story...

Rust .. Yep got plenty .. This one is in good nic even though it may not look like it ... I'll look into the hydro forming .. I'm experimenting with molasses rust removal for small bits .... There's a hot rodder on utube in Victoria who removes rust on panels ..takes 2-3 weeks but only removals the rust not the metal... For mine I'm going to get professionally sand blasted after I've finished the floor panels..

Note how there are two Limos in the space of one 4WD .. There is a caramel one behind the green one you may not be able to see

I had never heard of the Goggomobile Dart before coming to Australia, I believe it is an Australian model, but on the other hand I have not found any reference to the Coupe' since coming here.

At the risk of hijacking this thread, the Goggomobil Dart was made in Sydney by Bill Buckle Motors.
