I think the local Blackwoods swap the same brand cylinders as Bunnings, so I don't think there's an exclusivity agreement. Maybe it's logistics?

5km away from Bunnings West Ipswich is Bunnings Bundamba, both are in the Ipswich City Council local government area. Bundamba doesn't keep welding gases, according to one of the staff there, and I can't vouch for the accuracy of this, they don't keep welding gases 'because of council regulations'.

flammable gases must be stored outside...could this be a reason why some dont stock?

but having said that I have no idea why mapgas is allowed to be stored inside?..maybe its also quantity/volume of cylinders?

even lpg cylinders are supposed to stored outside...how ever a radiant lpg heater is allowed to be inside inside when in use?????

Not sure if this has been posted earlier but BOC are doing a much cheaper option now, supposedly they were losing too much business to the newer mobs such as Bunnings total tools etc

    $108 for a D size and a free refill once a year.

So essentially $54 for 2 D bottles over a year, no rental fees. This is the best option I have found by far. Hope this helps

That is a really good deal (but they've got a history of excessive rental fees to overcome) particularly as you don't have the deposit that Bunnings take, you have a wider choice of gasses, and that G size pricing becomes very economical. That said, I kind of wish they offered E as well, as G size bottles are much harder to wrangle.

Only downside is that you can't go swap a bottle on a Sunday like you can at Bunnings

BOC have well and truly been caught red-handed over the bottle charges they used to inflict on their customers.

Bunnings charge a one off fully refundable $300 deposit for an E size cylinder, which presumably covers all their costs should they never see that cylinder again.

Its been a while now but BOC used to charge me an annual per E size bottle rent of $180, no refunds no nothing. And while I never lost a bottle their charges should you do so were truly eye watering.

With my (low) gas usage the Bunnings deal is the much better option, but we all have to work out our own economics.

    Competition is a wonderful thing.

Me too. The BOC deal looks good if you use 2 bottles per year or more.

That's nice of BOC all the while continuing to gouge their existing customers about $17 a month per cylinder. What a bunch of ba$tards.
I'm not doing much TIG welding or oxy stuff any more and must have paid them hundreds of dollars on rental over the years as I can't bear to take back half full bottles but in hindsight I think I should have and saved a heap of cash.
If there's anyone in Perth who would like to empty a D size argon and oxy before I send them back please pm me.

    $17 a month now eh?

Unbeknown to me BOC had introduced the plan in Deverell's post several months before I got wind of Bunnings gas plan, meantime BOC continued to charge me rent of $15 per bottle per month. The day after (and I don't think that's a coincidence) I returned BOC's bottles someone from BOC popped up on the phone and gave me the spiel about their new plan. Ar$ehole$.

BOC have still not advised a lot of their customers of this new scheme/plan.. it first started in 2016...or thats when I found about it..apparently been in for a few months at the time..i rang HO and complained bitterly about their non disclosure and asked for rebate of rental since it was introduced..I think just just laughed when I hung up.

if you dont ask they dont tell!!
    (certainly not a coincidence Bob)

as said above ...but with more expletives

Forgive me for not reading through all 19 pages of this thread; I've been renting an E cylinder of Argoshield from BOC for about 15 years, like others here no doubt I sometimes use a lot and sometimes use none at all depending on what projects I have on. I got the bill for the year's rental, $236.28. From memory my last refill was $80 odd. They've suggested I go onto the 'G-plan' which as above is $219 per year which includes one full G bottle per year. I compared that with a local mob who do a buy-in / swap & go arrangement and it's $669 to buy in $199 refill for a G, $349 buy-in $99 refill for a D. If I was going to go to a G cylinder, the BOC deal looks pretty good. Tossing up whether to go for the buy-in arrangement on a D size, or the BOC G-plan. I wouldn't consider the little bunnings bottles, I'd be back and forth a couple of times a week every time I have a decent project.

My local Bunnings is now carrying the next bottle up to D size E bottles a refill is $159 u get 4.9 cubic meters, u could afford to buy 4 E cylinders for your purchase of a G size tank because u get your refund back when u no longer want to keep it

That's interesting, I'll have to go and have a look at what the big green shed near me has. I think they're unlikely to have the full range but worth checking. The $669 buy-in is not even under consideration for me, even if it worked out cheaper over 5 years or whatever that is too big a hit to shell out up front. The BOC plan has no upfront.
I was going to add to my post above the E size from the industrial hardware place who offer buy-in then swap-and-go, they're $485 buy-in and $159 swap for the E. I'll have to see what bunnings buy-in / deposit / whatever is, I reckon I can find $219 for the BOC rental easier than I can find $485 up front for the other mob.
