Can anyone offer any information about the latest Laser Gun Sights like this?

Tactical RED Laser Sight Scope Rifle GUN Scope 2 Switch Rail Mounts FOR Hunting | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Tactical-red-laser-sight-scope-rifle-gun-scope-2-switch-rail-mounts-for-hunting-/161193306455?pt=AU_Hunting&hash=item2587dea957)

I bought a cheap sight quite a while ago. $8 including an LED Torch. I have not been impressed enough to fit it to my gun and try it. What I would like to know is can the laser be focussed with a sight like this? I would like a laser sight that is useful out to 150m.

Hi Dean,

Unless its military grade, it's probably not worth buying or expecting much from it. In fact I can't think of any laser sights being used by any forces worldwide at the moment. If anyone is, they would be for really close combat situations and hollywood movies. A lot of sights are now red dot sights though, good for close combat and middle sort of distance. There's night sighting devices that are lasers but can't be seen without the correct NVG which can be focused.

... they would be for really close combat situations and hollywood movies.I think that sums it up.

It's effectiveness at distance all depends on the lasers divergence. A good quality laser sight (US$400) has a quoted divergence of 1.2mrad which will give you a 180mm dot at 150 metres. I checked on ebay and only found one "cheap" laser sight ($80) that quoted divergence, which was <1.2mrad ... although when I look at the one you linked to it had
Beam Diameter: <1.2mwhich I think is actually meant to be a divergence of <1.2mrad. Not sure if I would trust that figure.

What size dot were you getting at 150m?

I see that they say it is a RED DOT LASER.

the pics dont show the red dot on the target... I wonder if it just projects a red dot onto the lens rather that actually emitting a laser beam onto the target...just like a normal RED DOT sight

all though they do have all the warnings inscribed on the sight????

All the specs and photos would suggest that it is a red laser sight and not a red dot holographic/reflex type sight (or part thereof).

Holographic sights, don't actually use a laser, rather just an LED.

I was talking to a mate who's really into his guns and sights. He says you can get laser sights that will emit a red or green dot on target from anywhere up to a kilometer or so (you need a sight to see it though). Obviously they aren't your $20 ebay jobs but ones you can only buy from a gun shop for your gun.

Thanks for the information guys. or around the $20 mark I don't expect a lot. These sights do look very impressive tho :D. I originally thought of combining a laser sight with an LED torch focused to a tight beam as per the original purchase.

Vernon, the divergence values help. I had read that figure in one of the listings and have not yet looked up/worked out what it means in real life. Now I have an idea.

which I think is actually meant to be a divergence of <1.2mrad. Not sure if I would trust that figure.

If you consider the figure of 12000m beam distance quoted, I can understand your reluctance.

Not sure dot is the right term. When I tried it last time, just before my post it was about the 400mm figure, but this was a rainy/misty night. I don't remember what it was with a clear view, but I did not think it was so big it would not work. My position here is that I am considering shooting across an open paddock to game (Deer, Roo) with a background of Blue Gum Forest and sometimes one of the dam mounds, which means grass.

I did see one green laser sight after I started the thread, that said it could be focused. It was probably the one you mentioned. I don't know anything about the colour difference tho. I did look it up, but only found a mention of the difference in battery life.

I just went out to check the dot size as it is now dark enough to throw it against the Blue Gums and see the dot. It is about 200mm. It has taken me a while to type this post as I was dragged out by SWMBO, to shoot a Wedge Tailed Eagle with my SLR. I haven't looked at the shots yet, but I can tell you that I need a bigger calibre lens than a 300mm. I was as close as I could go without being in the paddock with him. He knew I was there of course, and eventually flew off.

Ben, I would like a sight like your mate quoted. Out of my price range I guess. I wonder what sort of attachment method the scope/sight requires. I have a 4-16 x 44 scope on the gun, which I would not want to disturb. Mounting and sighting a laser is not very difficult. If the laser viewing sight does not have to be precisely aimed, and it can be attached without disturbing the existing scope. That is something I need to look into, but I think it would be out of my price range.

The laser sight I mentioned before, which is Aussie made, was somewhere around the $300 mark depending on which model you chose. I could not see any difference between them and the EBay ones except the price and the aircraft grade aluminium (maybe). I really cannot see why this is needed. If you are going to be that rough with it?? It always sounds good tho doesn't it? How much more does it cost. I might be wrong, but I am sceptical about most things these days and marketing is purely about what the gullible public will fall for.

That particular sight places a red dot on the target. It seems to comply with the Australian max. power of less than 5 milliwatts so it should be legal to own. Their idea of range seems to be a bit optimistic but it depends on their interpretation of how you measure the dot. (are you looking directly at the laser or are you looking at the dot being reflected back off an animal?)
I would think this is really suited to fairly close-in shooting with a firearm that shoots pretty flat, say 50M with a .17HMR?
Green lasers show up better but are dearer.

How long has the Oz max power been <5mw? I had the idea it was <1mw, but that does not mean much. Some listings I have seen state =5mw then others range from <1mw upwards. A few variations, but do they actually vary in power?:D It would be interesting to see how good the green laser NEW Style Green Laser Sight Weaver Mount FOR Pistol Handgun Hunting Flashlight | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/380926207576?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649) was for my purposes. It is only $68 total. Still a bit much as a toy if it does not do as I wish.

It is about 200mm.That would seem pretty close to spec then.

I don't know anything about the colour difference tho.As already mentioned green is more visible in daylight, but more expensive, less robust and has a narrower operational temperature range (about 4º to 38ºC).

That focusable one looks interesting. If you do get one, I'd love to hear how it performs.

I would like to try one Vernon. At the moment finances are tight. If I do get it I will post a bit of a review.
