heavy duty loading ramps

i want to build a set of ramps for loading a case front end loader onto a truck.

loader weighs about 3-4ton.

where can i find out what strength or load rating RHS has.

Don't f**k around building your own, just go and buy a set of the aluminium ones. If you make some out of RHS, how will you pick them up?

i dont like the aluminium ramps every set i have seen are bent.

we always used steel ramps for loading out small dozer's onto the truck. 5 -6 ton machine. sold teh truck and ramps 2 years ago or so. never had a problem lifting them.

That'd be cause they had cut corners by buying a set that weren't rated for loading the equipment they had in the first place.

Everyone I know of around here has Alum ramps and I haven't seen a bent pair in years, as they buy the appropriate ones to handle their machinery.

will only weight aprox 100kg to suport 4 ton easily. over a 4m ramp.

they probably don't need to be that long even.

100mm x 50mm x 2.5mm rhs 4m span can support 1800kg @ 5.56kg/m
50mm x 50mm x 1.6mm shs over 500mm span can support 3000kg @ 2.38kg/m

so if i put 2 - 100 x 50 x 2.5mm rhs 500mm apart with 50 x 50 x 1.6mm rhs every 400mm.

then they will weigh 100.86kg plus or minus each

and be able to support 5.4ton.

You can allways weld a flat like a 100x5 along the outside to be safe. But your calculations sound about right.

thats not a bad idea.

iv got that tralier half made. just gotta put the hitch on and the tray on top and its done.

then i will strt on the boxes and brackets to hold everything.:2tsup:
